Why we exist

Most mountain homes fight the land. Ours listen to it.

We build a small number of homes each year — modern in line, timeless in material, and shaped for the steep, the windy, and the breathtaking. Walnut underfoot. Local stone at the hearth. Glass that erases the wall between your living room and the ridge beyond.

Beneath the beauty runs an uncommon discipline. We come from commercial and industrial construction — where budgets hold and schedules mean something — and we brought that rigor home, so the experience of building feels as good as the home itself.

The aesthetic

Modern in line. Timeless in material.

The Walnut & Stone Standard

Building here should be something you look forward to.

And it is — when the budget is settled before ground breaks, one person always picks up the phone, and you can watch your home take shape week by week. That's how we run every project.

A complete budget before ground breaksEvery selection and allowance settled, transparent, and in writing — fixed-fee or cost-plus, whichever suits you.
One point of contactOne person who knows your project end to end — and answers when you call.
You always know where things standPhotos, milestones, and decisions in one place, from anywhere you happen to be.
01

The Land

We walk your lot with you — light, views, slope, where the home wants to sit — and frame an honest budget range from day one.

02

The Design

Bring us in as early as you like. Some clients have us beside their architect from the first sketch; others arrive with finished plans. Either way, the design is priced as it's drawn.

03

The Budget

Selections, allowances, and schedule — complete and in writing before ground breaks. Fixed-fee or cost-plus: your choice.

04

The Build

The best part. Your home takes shape and you watch it happen — clear milestones, one point of contact, progress you can see from anywhere.

05

The First Years

A walkthrough, a real warranty, and a team that answers the phone in year three the way we did in week one.

Our story

Raised on commercial construction. Devoted to homes.

Walnut & Stone is led by its founder, whose family built its name in commercial and industrial construction — work where the budget holds because it has to, and the schedule is a promise, not a hope.

We brought that discipline to the mountains and turned it toward the thing commercial work never had: a family at the end of the build. The result is a home that looks the way you dreamed it — delivered the way commercial clients expect.

Building from afar

Six hundred miles away — and you'll never miss a week.

Many of our clients build from Florida, the Northeast, or the West Coast and watch the whole thing happen. We've delivered homes for clients who spent the entire build out of state — it's one of the things we do best.

  • A private project portal with every decision, document, and dollar
  • Weekly logs with photos and video from your site
  • Drone flights as the views open up from your future living room
  • One point of contact, on your schedule and your time zone

"We live in Columbus, Ohio, and made it to the site four times in sixteen months. The weekly photo log became a ritual — Sunday morning, coffee, the new pictures. We never once felt removed from our own build." — G. & C. S. · Built from Ohio

Already have land?

We'll tell you what your lot can become.

Slope, views, access, water, setbacks — a mountain lot hides as much as it shows. Send us the address. We'll give you an honest read on buildability, the best siting for light and views, and a realistic budget range. No charge, no obligation.

And when a lot earns the next step, we go beyond eyes: a LiDAR drone overflight reads the true shape of your terrain — every fold, every drainage path, detail the eye can't catch — and becomes the grade plan your home is designed on.

"It's hard to trust a builder when you've been burned before, so we checked everything. Every time we questioned a number and did our homework, theirs held up — honest, fair, and in more than one case more than fair."
— J. & A. P. · Black Mountain
"They treated this project like they were building the home for themselves. The level of integrity matched the level of craftsmanship — I don't know a higher compliment for a builder." — M. T. · Asheville
"Ours is a steep lot — better than 35 degrees in places, with some real soil challenges. They walked it with us before we signed anything, told us what building there would actually cost, and the number held." — C. & L. B. · Weaverville
"The communication was the most impressive thing to me — calls and emails answered the same day, usually with photos from the site. We were never the ones doing the chasing." — D. W. · Built from Atlanta
